William Howard Taft was the 27th President of the United States, serving from 1909 to 1913. He was the only president to also serve as Chief Justice of the United States. Taft was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Alphonso Taft and Louise Torrey. He attended Yale University and graduated second in his class in 1878. He then attended Cincinnati Law School, where he graduated first in his class in 1880. Taft began his political career in 1882, when he was appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Cincinnati. He was later appointed Solicitor General of the United States in 1890 and was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1900. In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Taft as Secretary of War. In 1908, Roosevelt chose Taft as his successor and he was elected President in 1908. As President, Taft pursued a conservative agenda, including the passage of the Payne-Aldrich Tariff Act and the establishment of the United States Department of Labor. He also supported the creation of the National Conservation Commission and the passage of the Sixteenth Amendment, which established the federal income tax. Taft was defeated for re-election in 1912 and returned to his legal career. He was appointed Chief Justice of the United States in 1921 and served until his death in 1930.
