Stephen Henry Lewis is a Canadian politician, orator, announcer and diplomat. He was the leader of the Social Democratic Party of New Ontario for most of the 1970s. For many years as leader, his father David Lewis was also the leader of the federal New Democratic Party. After joining politics, he became a broadcaster on both CBC Radio and Citytv of Toronto. In the mid-1980s, he was appointed Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney of the Radical Conservative Party. He quit his job in 1988 and worked in various United Nations agencies in the 1990s. During the 2000s, he served as the United Nations Special Envoy on HIV / AIDS in Africa. In 2003, he joined the Order of Canada. In 2014, he was an Outstanding Visiting Professor at Ryerson University in Toronto.
