Was nominated for Broadway's 1966 Tony Award for book written with Jerome Lawrence as part of Best Musical nomination for "Mame."

Playwright, lyricist and screenwriter, who usually worked in conjunction with Jerome Lawrence. All together, they collaborated on 39 plays. During World War II, they established the Armed Forces Radio Services, which provided entertainment and news to troops both overseas and stateside. Lee was a graduate of Wesleyan University and co-founder (with Lawrence) of the American Playwrights' Theatre in 1965.

He is known for his work on Inherit the Wind (1960), First Monday in October (1981) and The Unexpected (1952). He was married to Janet Waldo.
