Joseph Kiptum is a Kenyan long-distance runner who was born on 1956. He is best known for his success in the marathon, having won the Boston Marathon in 1985 and the London Marathon in 1986. He also won the New York City Marathon in 1987. Kiptum began his running career in the late 1970s, competing in local races in Kenya. He quickly rose to prominence, winning the Kenyan National Cross Country Championships in 1979 and 1980. He also won the Kenyan National 10,000m Championships in 1981. Kiptum made his international debut in 1982, competing in the World Cross Country Championships. He went on to compete in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, finishing in fourth place in the marathon. Kiptum's greatest success came in the marathon, where he won the Boston Marathon in 1985 and the London Marathon in 1986. He also won the New York City Marathon in 1987.
