Isabel Allende is a Chilean-American writer. She is best known for her novels, which are often based on her personal experiences and pay homage to the political and cultural heritage of her native country. She has written over 20 books, including the internationally acclaimed novel The House of the Spirits. Allende has been awarded numerous honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Book Award, and the PEN/Nabokov Award. Allende was born in Lima, Peru, to Chilean parents. She moved to Chile at the age of three and grew up in Santiago. She studied at the University of Chile, where she earned a degree in psychology. After college, she worked as a journalist and editor for various publications in Chile and Venezuela. In the early 1980s, Allende moved to the United States, where she began writing her first novel, The House of the Spirits. The book was an immediate success and was later adapted into a film. Allende has since written numerous novels, including Of Love and Shadows, Eva Luna, and The Japanese Lover. Allende is also an active philanthropist and has founded several organizations, including the Isabel Allende Foundation, which works to empower women and girls around the world. She is also a member of the International Parliament of Writers and the International Women's Forum.
