Ed Markey is an American politician who has served as the junior United States Senator from Massachusetts since 2013. He previously served as the U.S. Representative for Massachusetts's 7th congressional district from 1976 to 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, Markey has been a leading voice on energy and environmental issues. Markey was born on July 11, 1946, in Malden, Massachusetts, the son of Christina M. (née Sullivan) and John E. Markey. He graduated from Malden Catholic High School in 1964 and from Boston College in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. He later attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where he earned a Master of Public Policy degree in 1971. Markey began his political career in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, where he served from 1973 to 1976. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1976, representing Massachusetts's 7th congressional district. He served in the House for 36 years, from 1977 to 2013. In 2013, Markey was elected to the United States Senate, defeating Republican Gabriel Gomez in the general election. He was reelected in 2020, defeating Republican Kevin O'Connor. Markey is the longest-serving member of the Massachusetts congressional delegation. He is the dean of the Massachusetts congressional delegation and the second longest-serving current member of Congress from New England, behind only Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont.
