Dan Hughes is an American basketball coach and former player. He was born on April 14, 1955 in Lowell, Ohio. He attended the University of Akron, where he played basketball and graduated in 1977. Hughes began his coaching career in 1979 as an assistant coach at the University of Akron. He then moved on to become the head coach at the University of Akron-Wayne in 1982. He then moved on to become the head coach at the University of Akron in 1985. In 1989, Hughes was hired as an assistant coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers. He then moved on to become the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs in 1992. He was the head coach of the Spurs for nine seasons, leading them to the playoffs in each of those seasons. In 2001, Hughes was hired as the head coach of the Seattle SuperSonics. He was the head coach of the SuperSonics for two seasons before being fired in 2003. In 2004, Hughes was hired as the head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats. He was the head coach of the Bobcats for three seasons before being fired in 2007. In 2008, Hughes was hired as the head coach of the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League. He was the head coach of the Toros for two seasons before being fired in 2010. In 2011, Hughes was hired as the head coach of the Canton Charge of the NBA Development League. He was the head coach of the Charge for two seasons before being fired in 2013. In 2014, Hughes was hired as the head coach of the Austin Spurs of the NBA Development League. He was the head coach of the Spurs for two seasons before being fired in 2016. In 2017, Hughes was hired as the head coach of the Texas Legends of the NBA Development League. He is currently the head coach of the Legends.
