Maryott ran for U.S. Representative in California's 49th congressional district during its 2018 "jungle primary." He received 5,496 votes, losing to Diane Harkey (R) and Mike Levin (D). On March 5th, 2019, Maryott announced he would run for U.S. Congress in California's 49th district in 2020.
Maryott thinks that the U.S. should retain a strong presence on the world stage and "maintain its status as the world’s sole superpower" with a strong military.
Maryott worked in the investment banking and finance sectors for over 25 years and is a Certified Financial Planner. He most recently served as Regional Brokerage Manager and Senior Vice President at Wells Fargo Advisors in Newport Beach, California. Maryott retired from his position at Wells Fargo in January 2018.
In November 2016, Maryott was elected to the position of City Councilman for San Juan Capistrano's 5th district. During his tenure, Maryott has served on the Board of the Transportation Corridor Agency, the Orange County Library Advisory Board, and the Ocean Feasibility Study. Maryott was a member of the city's Trails and Equestrian Commission. In addition, in 2019 he served as Mayor of San Juan Capistrano.
Maryott is concerned about the negative impacts of climate change but says that efforts to address it must "balance the needs of all the major economies – ours included." He has also spoken out against the federal gas tax due to its economic implications, arguing that it is a "regressive tax, most affecting the poorest families."
